KDP Keywords and Categories That Actually Rank
How Amazon's search works, how to research the 7 keyword fields, and how to pick categories where your book can realistically hit the top 100.

Amazon is a search engine that happens to sell books. Ranking there is less about volume and more about matching the phrases a ready-to-buy reader types.
How Amazon book search works
Amazon indexes your title, subtitle, series, author, description and the 7 keyword fields, then ranks by relevance and sales velocity. Two consequences: a keyword you don't cover anywhere can't rank, and a keyword too competitive for your sales volume won't rank either.
Finding keyword phrases in 15 minutes
- Type a seed phrase into the Amazon Books search bar and note every autocomplete suggestion — those are real queries.
- Scan the top 10 results: their subtitles are keyword-optimised for you.
- Read 3-star reviews of competitors for the language buyers use ("finally explains X without jargon").
- Keep 20 phrases, then pick the 7 with clear buyer intent and thin, generic top results.
Rules for the 7 keyword fields
- Use phrases, not single words: "meal prep for night shift workers".
- Don't repeat words already in your title/subtitle — they're already indexed.
- No competitor names, no "free", no "bestseller", no subjective claims.
- Include one or two long-tail phrases you can genuinely own.
Choosing categories you can win
Go as specific as you honestly fit. Being #3 in a narrow subcategory earns the orange badge, extra visibility and better recommendations; being #48,000 in a broad one earns nothing. Check the top 20 in a category — if their Best Sellers Rank is above roughly 100,000, that category is reachable for a new title.
Refresh, don't set and forget
Revisit keywords after 30 days. If impressions are high and clicks are low, the cover or title is the problem. If clicks are high and sales are low, fix the description or price. Change one variable at a time.

Frequently asked questions
+ How many keywords does Amazon KDP allow?
Seven keyword fields per title. Each field should hold a full search phrase rather than a single word.
+ Should keywords repeat words from my book title?
No. Title and subtitle are already indexed, so repeating those words wastes a field. Use the seven slots for phrases that appear nowhere else in your metadata.
+ How do I choose the best KDP category?
Pick the most specific subcategory your book truly belongs to, and check the Best Sellers Rank of its top titles. If the top 20 sit above roughly 100,000 BSR, a new book can realistically reach the top 100 there.
